Since the news of David Bowie’s death was announced yesterday and an outpouring of tributes occurred, fans are sharing what they believe to be the last photo taken of the superstar.

The photo was shared on the official Instagram account for David Bowie on January 8th, 2016 – on what was also the day of his 69th birthday and two days before his death.

His death was announced on social media on Monday. Bowie passed away, aged 69, surrounded by family after a “courageous” 18-month discreet battle with cancer.

The image, widely believed to be the last professional photograph of him, was taken by the photographer Jimmy King, a friend of Bowie's who captured his image numerous times over decades. It is not known when exactly the photo was taken.

Wearing a Thom Browne suit, hat and sporting a beaming smile, fans on social media pointed out his happiness and everlasting style, with one user commenting: “Love this photo… such a suave man… RIP Mr Bowie.. you are the man.”

Many users commented on his smile, with one writing: “Such a handsome smile. He brought me and countless others similar smiles through his work”.

Many fans took to the streets to pay tribute to the Heroes singer.

An impromptu street party took place in Bowie’s birthplace of Brixton, south London where the Ritzy Cinema displayed the message: “DAVID BOWIE. OUR BRIXTON BOY. RIP.”

Elsewhere around the world, mourners left flowers at Bowie’s New York apartment and former home in Berlin.
