Davina McCall took to Instagram to share a moving message on World Alzheimer's Day on Tuesday (21 September). She spoke about her own family's journey with the illness and shared words of comfort to all those experiencing it.

She opened up about the decision to move her father into a home. A hard step for any family, Davina praised her mother for how well she took care of him for so long.

Sharing a smiling photo of her parents, the TV star wrote: 'This is my Mum and Dad... Dad (Andrew… Total legend ) has Alzheimer’s. My mum has cared for him so brilliantly. He is now in a wonderful home, where they take amazing care of him. It’s been hard on my mum but she was at breaking point. He is ok, but it is f*cking heartbreaking this illness.'

Speaking about the illness and the hope of advances in treatment, she continued: 'The worst thing is the loss of dignity… There are great inroads being made into new treatments… I heard of great hope of a new one in Australia very recently. Two thirds of Alzheimer’s patients are women… Taking HRT is known to reduce your risk of getting it.'

Davina is a big supporter of HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) and has spoken about it in her work around Perimenopause and the Menopause, on which she is writing a book.

Finishing the post with words for anyone experiencing the illness, she wrote: 'If you know anyone with Alzheimer’s, @alzheimerssoc are so helpful. My heart goes out to anyone supporting a loved one with Alzheimer’s or anyone that’s lost someone to this cruel illness.'

She ended with a message of gratitude to her mother, saying: 'And a heartfelt thank you to my mum. You are the best Gabba. Love you.'

Sending our love to the McCall family and all of those affected by the illness.
