Yahoo Finance DeGeneres: Gun Violence In US Is Heartbreaking
Ellen DeGeneres has told Sky News she is "outraged" at police brutality in the US but believes Hillary Clinton can be the woman to change things.
The actress and talk show host was speaking as she promoted her new film Finding Dory, about a blue tang fish with short-term memory loss.
DeGeneres said she understands the anger following the shootings of two black men in Minnesota and Louisiana in recent weeks.
Their deaths led to the killing of five police officers at Black Lives Matter demonstration in Dallas, Texas.
"I feel like it's heartbreaking. Look, I know what it feels like to not be a part of mainstream and to feel like you're not being respected and given equal rights.
"So I understand the outrage and I'm, I think like most people, outraged at what's been happening and think there should be more accountability.
"Not saying anything against the police force, because they do risk their lives every single day and you can't judge a whole group of people for some horrible situations that have happened but I understand the anger and I think we need to change a lot of things."
DeGeneres said she believes Mrs Clinton is as "smart as can be" and "equipped" to make changes if elected as US president later this year.
Finding Dory comes 13 years after Pixar's smash animation Finding Nemo was released. It follows Dory as she attempts to find her parents while battling her poor memory.
DeGeneres said she thinks it's important to have lead characters with flaws in films.
"First of all, I think we all have disabilities. I don't think it's a weird thing. I think what's wrong is to have any lead character that doesn't have any disability or any flaws. There's just no such thing.
"We have enough airbrushing to show perfection in the world with photographs and with movies and I know it's an escapism and we're supposed to go and see people who are beautiful and that's the whole point of it but we should also see reality. We should see people and characters that aren't perfect.
"And what's not perfect about them is what makes them special."
DeGeneres said she could definitely see a third 'Finding' film being released: "You have so many characters that you want to see again. I think you do want to see the sea lions, you want to see Becky and you want to see Hank.
"I'd be happy to be a small cameo in all of their journeys next time."
Finding Dory has become the highest-grossing film of the year in the US so far and also features the voices of Dominic West, Idris Elba, Ed O'Neill, Albert Brooks and Diane Keaton.
