Deliveroo is pulling out of the German market

App-based food delivery service Deliveroo said on Monday that it would no longer operate in the German market.

The company has not ruled out returning to Germany in the future, but said it is pulling out on the 16 August “as the company doubles down on growth in other markets around the world.”

“We are very grateful to our highly talented employees for their dedication to bringing great food home with us. We will ensure that they are supported at this stage,” a Deliveroo spokesperson said in a statement.

“Deliveroo will continue to grow and invest in markets around the world seeking to become the world’s definitive food company,” the company said, adding that it will “refocus resources and investment to accelerate growth and expansion in its markets across Europe and APAC.”

Amazon and Deliveroo were put under investigation by the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority in July after Amazon invested £457m ($575m) into the UK-headquartered startup.

Deliveroo, founded in 2013, is active in 500 cities across 14 countries, and says it employs over 2,500 people globally.
