Broncos coach Vic Fangio considering punishments for QBs after COVID-19 'masking slip'

Denver Broncos coach Vic Fangio is still upset with his quarterback room after they all landed on the reserve/COVID-19 list last week due to what starting quarterback Drew Lock described as a “masking slip.”

On Monday, Fangio said the team is considering additional discipline for their quarterbacks, and that everything is “on the table” depending on what the NFL does in response.

"We're going to consider all that and, again, try to see what the league, if they have anything planned and if not, we'll take our measures,'' Fangio said, via ESPN.

“Everything’s on the table, but right now I would say it’s more the fine mode.”

Drew Lock apologizes for ‘masking slip’

Third-string quarterback Jeff Driskel landed on the reserve/COVID-19 list last Thursday, days before Lock, Brett Rypien and Blake Bortles were all determined to be ineligible for their 31-3 loss to the New Orleans Saints due to contact tracing.

Fangio said that he believes their exposure to the virus came when they were all watching film together on Tuesday.

“As a proud member of the Denver Broncos, I can attest that our entire team has taken the COVID-19 pandemic seriously, following all the rules to keep each other safe,” Lock wrote in an apology on Sunday, in part. “We’re tested daily, get quick results and are confident our facility is a safe environment for everyone.

“In a controlled and socially distanced area, we let our masking slip for a limited amount of time. An honest mistake, but one I will own.”

The Broncos attempted to bring in offensive quality control coach Rob Calabrese to start instead, but the league shut that down. They eventually activated wide receiver Kendall Hinton from the practice squad to play instead, though he struggled. Hinton finished just 1-of-9 for 13 yards and threw two interceptions in the loss.

Fangio said that all Broncos players tested negative for the coronavirus on Monday. Lock, Rypien and Bortles must all test negative again on Tuesday before they can rejoin the team normally.

“I was disappointed on several levels that our QBs put us in that position, that our QBs put the league in that position,” Fangio said Sunday. “We count on them to be the leaders of our team, the leaders of our offense, and those guys made a mistake.”
