Dexter: New Blood spoilers follow.

Dexter: New Blood just brought back one of the original series' key characters, and the actor in question is "extremely happy" he was invited back to reprise his former role.

In the latest episode of the Dexter revival, fans were treated to the return of David Zayas' Angel Batista, who is now working as a Captain in Miami.

The scene in question saw Chief of Police Angela Bishop approach the now-Captain Batista for advice, after he delivered a speech at a law enforcement convention.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about his return for New Blood – 'Runaway' which aired on December 5 – Zayas admitted: "It brought back amazing memories. It was so much fun to be back."

"There were a lot of emotions that went into it, but overall I was extremely happy that I was asked to be a part of this reboot, even if it's in a small capacity," he added.

As for whether fans can expect to see the character back in future New Blood episodes, Zayas is staying tight-lipped. "You're going to have to wait and see," he teased.

The actor also offered his opinion on the controversial final season of Dexter, arguing that the finale felt "a little underwhelming" to him.

"You always want to do more and you always want to be involved more," he explained.

"I didn't have as much of a problem with the ending as a lot of people did, simply because I thought there was a chance that we could come back. It's almost like it was left like that on purpose so we could come back."

Dexter: New Blood airs on Showtime in the US, and on Sky Atlantic in the UK. All episodes of Dexter are also available on NOW.
