Digital health company Livongo looks to boost market share with new partnership

Margaret Graham, 74, has her blood pressure checked while visiting the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Friday, July 13, 2018. She had participated in a multi-year study, published on Wednesday, July 25, 2018, investigating a connection between high blood pressure and the risk of mental decline. "I feel like maybe with this study, some findings may come that will develop new drugs and also new activities, exercise, theories that will help people to maintain an acceptable blood pressure level," Graham says. Livongo, a health company that will be included in a first-ever digital formulary run by Cigna-Express Scripts, is partnering with a digital health service to boost its market share.

The company, which helps high blood pressure and diabetes patients manage their health through its digital platform, announced on Thursday plans to link with Higi, which has smart health stations at more than 10,000 chain grocery stores and pharmacies sites around the country. They include major brands like Rite Aid, Walgreens (WBA) and Kroger (KR).

Higi’s stations help to screen for some of the most common chronic diseases including high blood pressure and diabetes. Meanwhile, Livongo boasts some of the country’s largest employers on its client list, and its inclusion on the Cigna-Express formulary gives it access to millions covered by the health giant.

“More than 58 million people have conducted over 335 million biometric tests using Higi Smart Health Stations through Higi’s self-service, digital platform,” according to a joint statement from the companies.

Jennifer Schneider, Livongo’s president, said it is an effective method to gain patient compliance.

“This experience effectively strengthens Livongo’s [artificial intelligence] engine by aggregating important consumer health information, shared with their consent, from their daily life flow,” Schneider said.

The initiative is aimed at “closing gaps in care, and offering consumers proven solutions at an important moment when they are actively participating in their health,” she added.

The partnership will begin with 500 locations in Michigan.

The Livongo-Higi deal was announced just days before JPMorgan Chase’s annual health care conference in San Francisco.
