Following a year in which the very bedrock of society has been shaken, Dior poignantly chose Athens, the cradle of Western civilization, as the location for its Cruise 22 show.

Livestreamed on Thursday night from the city’s Panathenaic Stadium (the venue which hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the first modern Olympics in 1896), the event, attended by celebrities including Suki Waterhouse, Cara Delevingne and Anya Taylor Joy, presented a glamorous warm-up to this summer’s Tokyo Olympics, assuming it can go ahead.

Either way, Maria Grazia Chiuri’s vision for our societal rebirth is sporty and full of movement. The collection, which came in hues of gold, white and Grecian blue, centred on the peplos, the robe traditionally worn by women in ancient Greece. “Greece has always been a source of inspiration for me, said Chiuri, who moved the grecian gown from the realm of eveningwear into something infinitely more wearable: delicately draped dresses in stretchy and lightweight, diaphanous fabrics, styled with the brand’s new gold and silver Vibe sneakers.

“I sought to reflect the sense of freedom and creativity that this piece of clothing, represented throughout Ancient Greek art, so beautifully embodies,” said Chiuri. Hers are Greek goddesses on the go.

Elsewhere gladiator references come via one-shouldered cotton togas with adjustable drawstrings, chunky leather knee-high boots, armour-like body chains, embroidered fencing vests and hooded robes that felt very pre-match wrestler.

For those planning to actually break a sweat, Dior had stylish workoutwear aplenty; boxing shorts, running bras and leggings came in prints designed by artist Petro Ruffo, among them a motif inspired by the intertwined bodies of wrestlers painted on ancient Greek vases.

A tribute to our collective love of all things athleisure, Chiuri’s message was clear: Take your unworn eveningwear from the back of the cupboard– and run with it.
