The Dior menswear show is a highlight each season not simply for the beautiful, timeless clothes that hit the runway but thanks to the innovative and unexpected creative partnerships for which Dior’s artistic director for menswear Kim Jones has become known.

Last season the English designer, who recently also got the gig as head of womenswear at Fendi, dedicated the SS21 Dior menswear collection to African artist Amoafo Baoko.

Today he unveiled (via a filmed runway show released to the Dior website) an autumn/ winter 2021 collection created in partnership with Scottish-born, Trinidad-based artist Peter Doig.

Doig, an artist known for his giant, moody landscapes and magical realism, devised two emblems for the collection (one a likeness to Christian Dior’s dog Bobby, and the other a lion) that were seen on belts and jewellery, and also hand painted a selection of wool felt hats by Stephen Jones.

Doig’s influence was most strikingly felt however in the colour palette of the clothes, which came in a gorgeous array of dusky mauve, muted blues and navy sitting alongside brilliant yellow, blood orange and green.

The clothes themselves took inspiration from ceremonial garb, with button-front military suiting, neckties, berets and clompy boots a mainstay. However thanks to the Doig-esque pallette of pastels and acid brights, and a smattering of golden embellishment inspired by the Academie des Beaux-Arts, there was nothing war-like about it.

From coral coats with claret and purple-coloured camo print bomber jackets, and canary yellow car coats with dusty blue soldierly tailored trousers, the collection was an exercise in unexpected and totally joyous colour combinations good enough to lift even the lowest of lockdown spirits.
