SINGAPORE — A director was being probed by his company over his conduct in business deals when investigations incidentally revealed he had upskirt videos of his colleagues in his phone.

The 46-year-old Singapore permanent resident also targetted his wife’s sister, whom he would film under the table when she visited his family for dinner.

The man, who cannot be named due to a court gag order, was sentenced to 12 weeks’ jail on Monday (11 January) after he pleaded guilty to five out of 15 charges of insulting a woman’s modesty, with the remaining considered for sentencing. His offences happened from 2015 to 2019.

He is represented by lawyers Shashi Nathan and J Jayaletchmi, who sought a jail term of eight to ten weeks for their client.

A number of videos were recorded at the flat where the man used to stay. He took upskirt videos of at least three women including his sister-in-law, whom he filmed on six occasions over two years.

While working at his company, a tech multinational corporation, the man recorded videos of his female colleagues on at least four occasions.

According to the defence, the man’s employer seized his work laptop and phone for investigation in April 2019 following an unrelated complaint that was filed against him. The complaint alleged that he had awarded a disproportionate amount of business to one of the company’s suppliers.

After investigations were concluded, the man was informed that while he did not do anything wrong, the perception of wrongdoing was enough to terminate his employment given his senior position, Shashi said in court documents.

While going through the man’s phone, an employee discovered 15 upskirt videos and lodged a police report on 10 May 2019, the same day the man was fired from the company.

“Our client took these videos for his personal viewing, and would be overcome with shame and guilt each time he succumbed to the temptation of filming these women,” said Shashi.

The man has since attended therapy and counselling sessions and has attended church regularly. He has been diagnosed by a private clinic with adjustMENT disorder with mixed anxiety and depressed mood.

The man has also apologised to his sister-in-law and she has forgiven him. His daughter has also been diagnosed with psychiatric issues and is heavily reliant on her father for emotional support, Shashi said in his mitigation for the man.

For insulting the modesty of a woman, the man could have been jailed up to a year, and/or fined.
