Dirty Shirley cocktails are taking over TikTok: 'You get the nostalgia of youth but the buzz of adulthood'

The classic Shirley Temple is all grown up and quickly becoming this summer’s hottest cocktail!

How to avoid panic buying in an ultra-competitive housing market

For kids, few things feel more sophisticated than ordering a Shirley Temple. The original mocktail, a classic Shirley Temple features a blend of ginger ale and grenadine with a few maraschino cherries thrown into the mix. Now, the Shirley Temple has blossomed into the cocktail of the summer, reinventing itself as the Dirty Shirley.

Dirty Shirleys are making a splash all over bars and “DrinkTok,” such as this one from chef and TikToker Teon (@newportrifoodie). Like Teon’s other cocktail recipe videos, this Dirty Shirley tutorial features a festive and distinct aesthetic.

In the clip, Teon begins making the Dirty Shirley by pouring vodka, maraschino cherry liqueur, grenadine and lime juice into an elegant glass cocktail shaker.

Once shaken, Teon pours the cocktail into a tall glass over ice before topping it off with Sprite (ginger ale works, too) and giving it a stir. Finally, they garnish the Dirty Shirley with a cherry on a toothpick.

Shaking up the Dirty Shirley ingredients

Since the foundation for a Dirty Shirley requires few ingredients, the recipe lends itself well to different variations on the cocktail.

For instance, this double-spiked Dirty Shirley from TikTok account Sippin with Serens (@sippinwithserens) ups the ante on the cocktail by adding hard seltzer to the vodka and grenadine mix.

This Cranberry Dirty Shirley from TikTok account Good People, Bad TV (@goodpeoplebadtv) features a homemade “cran-adine” made from water, sugar and mashed cranberries, combined with vodka and ginger ale. The Good People, Bad TV host then garnishes the drink with fresh cranberries.

If you love a citrus infusion in your cocktails, look no further than this Dirty Shirley recipe from TikToker Kaitlyn Stewart (@likeablecocktails), which consists of a blend of citrus vodka, lemon-lime soda, grenadine and orange juice for an extra refreshing kick.

If you’re looking for a new twist on an old favorite, a Dirty Shirley is definitely worth a try. Or as one viewer observed in response to Teon’s video, “You get the nostalgia of youth but the buzz of adulthood.”
