Disney's Splash Mountain ride is officially closed — here's what ride you can expect to replace it

As Splash Mountain closes, an iconic Disney era comes to an end.

In 2020, Disney World announced that Tiana’s Bayou Adventure inspired by The Princess and the Frog would replace the old theme. Splash Mountain’s closure comes as the theme park prepares to launch the new attraction in 2024.

Why did Disney World shut down Splash Mountain?

In June 2020, during the racial justice protests surrounding the murder of George Floyd, people began to look into the specious origins of the water ride.

Like most Disney attractions, Splash Mountain pays homage to a film. In this case, it was the 1946 Academy Award-winning movie Song of the South. The picture is racist due to its depictions of Black Americans and was later banned from circulation and theaters.

Disney agreed to re-theme the ride and after nearly 34 years, Splash Mountain and its racist connotations are being removed.

What is replacing Splash Mountain at Disney World?

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is a similar water ride albeit without sinister origins. It will follow Princess Tiana and Louis, a jazz-loving alligator as they prep to throw a Mardi Gras bash.

The ride will also feature fireflies, a lush bayou and zydeco music, a kind of rhythm and blues from Louisiana.
