Dixie D'Amelio infuriates fans with 'privileged' comments: 'She tries too hard'

Dixie D'Amelio infuriates fans with 'privileged' comments: 'She tries too hard'

Dixie D’Amelio is facing a slew of backlash in response to her appearance in a recent Vogue video.

On Jan. 28, Vogue uploaded a clip titled, “24 Hours With TikTok Star Dixie D’Amelio,” which followed the 19-year-old as she traversed her Los Angeles apartment before showing up 45 minutes late to the studio to record new music.

The 11-minute video currently has more than 16,000 dislikes on YouTube, with several commenters asking why a publication like Vogue would give so much attention to a TikTok star who didn’t seem to have much to talk about.

In both D’Amelio and Vogue’s defense, other users pointed out that the video hit over 600,000 views in less than 24 hours.

“She tries too hard to be an ‘A-List celebrity,’ I have no hatred towards her but please know your place,” one person commented.

For the most part, the backlash revolved around D’Amelio’s comments on growing up and not wanting to attend college.

“I fully got into college [in] August of 2019 and I decided not to go just because traveling back and forth was going to be a lot,” D’Amelio said in the video. “I was also really scared because I saw someone make a TikTok saying that they would play my songs at a frat party and that’s really what like turned me away from going to school because I don’t think I could handle that level of embarrassment.”

“The fact that she turned down going to college, literally getting an education, because she didn’t want to get embarrassed if people played her songs at frat parties,” one person pointed out.

“It screams privilege,” another added.

Others brought up the point that D’Amelio seemed comfortable enough traveling to the Bahamas amid a global pandemic.

“Dixie: ‘I decided not to go to college because driving back and forth would be a lot’ Also her: parties during pandemic,” someone commented.

Instead of going to college, D’Amelio said she decided to get her own place to learn to be independent. She moved into an apartment 20 minutes away from her parents’ house in October 2020.

“I was supposed to be in college right now so I thought I needed to learn how to grow on my own and mature and I wasn’t doing that because I would just have my mom do things for me,” she explained. “So now, living by myself, I still go home every day to my parent’s house and have my mom do things for me. But, I mean, that’s what moms are for, right?”

Even though it seemed like she was kidding about her mom, some viewers took it very, very seriously.

“She has so much money she bought a house to ‘practice’ living alone,” a commenter said.

Considering D’Amelio has an estimated net worth of $3 million and over 48 million followers on TikTok, it doesn’t seem like the Vogue backlash will impact her too much.
