Dodgers scratch Clayton Kershaw for Game 2 of NLCS due to back spasms

Things just went from bad to worse for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series. A day after dropping Game 1 to the Atlanta Braves, the Dodgers scratched ace Clayton Kershaw from Game 2 due to back spasms.

The move comes as a surprise considering Kershaw pitched well against the San Diego Padres in his last start. Kershaw went six innings, giving up three runs in a 6-5 win over the Padres. He didn’t appear to be struggling with a back injury during that start.

It’s unclear how long Kershaw will miss due to the injury. Kershaw won’t pitch in Game 3, manager Dave Roberts confirmed Tuesday. The Dodgers didn’t immediately replace Kershaw on their NLCS roster, leaving open the possibility for Kershaw to still pitch during the series.

Tony Gonsolin will pitch Game 2 against the Braves

With Kershaw sidelined, Tony Gonsolin will get the start in Game 2. While Gonsolin isn’t a big name, he proved to be one of the Dodgers’ best starters in 2020, though it came in a limited sample. In eight starts, Gonsolin posted a 2.31 ERA.

Gonsolin has faced the Braves once in his career. In 2019, Gonsolin gave up one run over four innings in a 5-3 loss to the Braves.
