Does Beiersdorf's (ETR:BEI) Share Price Gain of 35% Match Its Business Performance?

Generally speaking the aim of active stock picking is to find companies that provide returns that are superior to the market average. And in our experience, buying the right stocks can give your wealth a significant boost. For example, the Beiersdorf Aktiengesellschaft (ETR:BEI) share price is up 35% in the last 5 years, clearly besting than the market return of around 16% (ignoring dividends). On the other hand, the more recent gains haven't been so impressive, with shareholders gaining just 4.5%, including dividends.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During five years of share price growth, Beiersdorf achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 6.4% per year. That makes the EPS growth particularly close to the yearly share price growth of 6.2%. This indicates that investor sentiment towards the company has not changed a great deal. Rather, the share price has approximately tracked EPS growth.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Beiersdorf the TSR over the last 5 years was 40%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Beiersdorf shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 4.5% over one year. Of course, that includes the dividend. However, the TSR over five years, coming in at 7.0% per year, is even more impressive. Potential buyers might understandably feel they've missed the opportunity, but it's always possible business is still firing on all cylinders. Before forming an opinion on Beiersdorf you might want to consider these 3 valuation metrics.
