Promotional feature from HM Government

If your business moves SPS goods, such as meat or plants, to Great Britain from the European Union (EU), then you need to know about the new requirements that started on 1 January 2022.

Traders will need to pre-notify when importing most Products of Animal Origin (POAO), Animal By-Products, High Risk Food not of Animal Origin and regulated plants and plant products from the EU into Great Britain.

Businesses (or a representative acting on their behalf), importing these goods from the EU may need to pre-notify authorities that their consignment will be entering Great Britain, through the relevant IT system.

These import controls form part of a longer phased approach, with additional import requirements introduced from 1 July 2022. Access the latest guidance for importing food, Animal By-Products and plants and plant products to GB from the EU on gov.uk to find out more.

Food

The UK Government is phasing in controls on imports of products of animal origin for human consumption that come from the EU. This includes meat, fish, eggs, dairy, honey, and gelatine.

From 1 January 2022, pre-notification is required for imports to Great Britain of most Products of Animal Origin (POAO) and High Risk Food and Feed not of Animal Origin (HRFNAO) from the EU. Businesses importing these goods from the EU may be required to pre-notify authorities on the Imports of Products, Animals, Food and Feed System (IPAFFS).

Additional import controls for POAO and HRFNAO will be introduced in a phased approach from 1 July 2022. Visit gov.uk for POAO and HRFNAO to find out more.

Animal By-Products

From 1 January 2022, pre-notification is also be required for imports to Great Britain of most Animal By-Products from the EU. Businesses importing these goods from the EU may be required to pre-notify authorities on a specific system called IPAFFS - The Imports of Products, Animals, Food and Feed System.

Plants and Plant Products

The government has also adopted a phased approach to plant health controls for plants and plant products imported from the EU.

From 1 January 2022, pre-notification is required for imports to GB of regulated plants and plant products from the EU on the relevant IT System.

Businesses that already use the PEACH IT system should continue to use it until they are contacted to switch to IPAFFS. If businesses are importing goods for the first time they should register to use IPAFFS.

Additional import controls for plants and plant products will be introduced from 1 July 2022. Visit gov.uk to find out more.

Note: The new rules for pre-notifying do not apply to imports of these products from the EU into Northern Ireland, or for imports from Ireland into Great Britain. The information in this article was correct at the time of publication
