The Duchess of Sussex accuses royal family of "perpetuating falsehoods"

The Duchess of Sussex says Buckingham Palace couldn’t expect she and Prince Harry to remain silent after “perpetuating falsehoods” about them.

In a new teaser of her televised interview with Oprah, which airs in the US on 8 March, Meghan is asked how she feels about the palace hearing her “speak her truth”.

She replied: “I don’t know how they could expect that, after all this time, we would still just be silent if there is an active role that The Firm is playing in perpetuating falsehoods about us. If that comes with risk of losing things, I mean… there is a lot that has been lost already.”

The interview is expected to detail the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s time as working royals, before they decided to step down in March 2020. The family of three now live in California with their son Archie.

Since the interview was announced, claims that Meghan bullied staff at Kensington Palace have circulated. The Sussexes’ communications secretary at the time, Jason Knauf, claims that she forced two members of staff to leave and undermined a third employee. Buckingham Palace has since said it is investigating the accusations.

The complaint was first filed in October 2018 and then was published by The Times on 4 March, ahead of her interview with Winfrey.

Meghan’s representative denies the claim, explaining in a statement: "The duchess is saddened by this latest attack on her character, particularly as someone who has been the target of bullying herself and is deeply committed to supporting those who have experienced pain and trauma.

"She is determined to continue her work building compassion around the world and will keep striving to set an example for doing what is right and doing what is good."

Meghan's interview with Oprah airs in the US on Sunday 7 March and the UK on Monday 8 March.
