This article contains details about baby loss.

The Duchess of Sussex, has opened up about the "unbearable grief" of experiencing a miscarriage, after losing a baby in July.

Meghan opened up about the tragic experience in an article for the New York Times, in which she described feeling a sharp cramp and dropping to the floor with son Archie in her arms.

"I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second," she said.

Meghan then recounted being in hospital along with her husband, Prince Harry.

"I felt the clamminess of his palm and kissed his knuckles, wet from both our tears. Staring at the cold white walls, my eyes glazed over. I tried to imagine how we’d heal," she wrote.

Meghan went on to reference the stigma that's attached to baby loss and causes some people to feel unable to speak out and ask for help.

"Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few," she said, before citing that miscarriage is tragically all too common, yet still still "riddled with (unwarranted) shame".

Meghan concluded the article by urging people to share their painful stories if they feel able to, and for others to listen. She suggested that asking the simple question "are you OK?" could go a long way in helping someone to heal.

Baby loss charity Tommy's has thanked Meghan for helping to break the silence around miscarriage and encouraging dads and partners to be part of the healing process.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who married in 2018, share a one-year-old son, Archie.
