An E-scooter rider is in a critical condition with a serious head injury following a crash.

The 55-year-old man was driving a hired e-scooter when he suffered the accident on Saturday around 8.30pm, Northumbria Police said.

He crashed his scooter after lagging behind his group of around 12 people on Redheugh Bridge Road, in Newcastle city centre.

A passing driver, who saw the injured rider, drove ahead to flag down the people he had been with and alert them to what had happened.

The rider, who is reported to have not been wearing a helmet, was taken to hospital with a serious head injury where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

Sergeant Matt Sykes, from Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols department, said: “This was a very serious incident which has left a 55-year-old man with potentially life-threatening injuries.

“Our enquiries are still at a very early stage but we believe that a male connected to a Land Rover or Range Rover flagged down someone in the party to tell them that the man had come off his e-scooter.

“We would urge that key witness to get in touch with us as they could provide vital information to help us to establish exactly what has happened.”

It isn’t compulsory to wear a helmet when driving an e-scooter in the UK.

The incident has prompted calls for riders to always wear a helmet when using an e-scooter, reported the Telegraph.

A 12-month trial of e-scooters, run by Neuron, is taking place in parts of Newcastle.

The vehicles can be hired using a smartphone app.

A spokesman for Neuron told The Telegraph: “Our thoughts go out to the injured rider and all those involved, and we wish for a speedy recovery. We are working closely with the Northumbria Police and the authorities as they conduct their investigations.

“At Neuron, rider safety is paramount. Our e-scooters are fitted with a range of safety features, including the world’s first app-controlled Helmet Lock which secures a safety helmet to every e-scooter.

“Whilst wearing a helmet is not compulsory in the UK, it is the single most important piece of safety equipment, and we strongly encourage all of our riders to wear one.”
