Easy Come, Easy Go: How Altyn (LON:ALTN) Shareholders Got Unlucky And Saw 79% Of Their Cash Evaporate

Long term investing is the way to go, but that doesn't mean you should hold every stock forever. We really hate to see fellow investors lose their hard-earned money. Anyone who held Altyn Plc (LON:ALTN) for five years would be nursing their metaphorical wounds since the share price dropped 79% in that time. On top of that, the share price has dropped a further 20% in a month.

Check out our latest analysis for Altyn

Because Altyn is loss-making, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

In the last five years Altyn saw its revenue shrink by 16% per year. That puts it in an unattractive cohort, to put it mildly. So it's not that strange that the share price dropped 27% per year in that period. We don't think this is a particularly promising picture. Of course, the poor performance could mean the market has been too severe selling down. That can happen.

You can see below how earnings and revenue have changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image).

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our free report on Altyn's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 9.2% in the last year, Altyn shareholders lost 17%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. However, the loss over the last year isn't as bad as the 27% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last half decade. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. Shareholders might want to examine this detailed historical graph of past earnings, revenue and cash flow.

We will like Altyn better if we see some big insider buys. While we wait, check out this free list of growing companies with considerable, recent, insider buying.
