Yahoo Finance Ecuadorian sprinter Alex Quiñónez shot dead
The 200m world bronze medallist was shot multiple times outside a shopping centre in his native city of Guayaquil on Friday night. His friend, Jogyro Alcaca, was also killed in the incident. A motive is yet to be established.
Quiñónez, 32, finished third in the 200m in Doha in 2019. In doing so, he became the first Ecuadorian to win a world medal at a track event.
He was also the country’s national record holder over 100m, 200m and 400m. Unfortunately, Quiñones was unable to participate in the Tokyo Olympic Games after he was suspended for violating the rules of whereabouts information.
Ecuadorian president Guillermo Lasso said that the assailants, as yet unknown, would be found and brought to justice. 'May he rest in peace,’ he tweeted. ‘Those who take the lives of Ecuadoreans will not remain unpunished.’
Quiñones murder comes only a week after the killing of Kenya's Agnes Tirop, who broke the women-only 10km road race world record. Tirop was stabbed to death in her home and her husband has subsequently been arrested on suspicion of murder.
