Sometimes the most comforting meal is one that reminds you of home. And sharing a piece of your history through food with the people you love can be extra heartwarming. ‘Yemisi Awosan’s, founder of Egunsi Foods, built her whole brand around that idea.

New York City-based Egunsi Foods (pronounced a-goo-see) makes ready-to-heat soups, sauces and starters. Each item is inspired by ‘Yemisi’s Nigerian heritage and the recipes she grew up eating.

You can eat the soups on the go, hot or cold, and use the sauces to make a delicious breakfast, lunch or dinner. (The brand provides recipes on its site.) You’ll want to try it all, from the Mushroom Pepper Soup to the Obe Ata Soup (West African tomato soup) to the Ofada Sauce (green pepper sauce).

‘Yemisi immigrated to the U.S. as a teenager. While away at college, ‘Yemisi began to miss her mother’s Nigerian cooking. She started cooking her family’s recipes on her own and shared her dishes with her new friends at school. She started hosting dinner parties in her dorm room to introduce friends to West African cuisine and the meals of her childhood.

After college, she continued sharing her food, and word quickly spread. People started requesting batches of soup and catering. So, in 2017, after plenty of market testing and development, she officially launched Egunsi Foods.

Egunsi Foods’ products are all made with natural ingredients. They’re also gluten-free, soy-free, and most items are vegan. Produce is sourced from farmers close-by whenever possible, and it also partners with farmers in Africa to source their raw materials.

Egunsi Foods ships nationwide from its website. However, if you live in NYC or neighboring cities, it’s also available via Fresh Direct and select grocery stores.

One of the best ways to try it is by ordering the Introductory Bundle of four soups for $80. The bundle includes Egunsi Soup, Groundnut Soup, Obe Ata Soup and the Gbegiri Soup. Altogether, it’s about five to seven servings. (For a limited time, you can get 20 percent off your entire order, no code required.)

“We want to invite you to experience the culture of our West African heritage through our ready-to-heat grab-n-go soups, sauces and entrees, or by using Egunsi Foods products to learn how to cook West African food that is easily incorporated into your daily meals,” the website reads.

The food feels like an intimate experience because, in a way, it is. You’re invited to taste the flavors and recipes of ‘Yemisi’s home in each jar. But the invitation isn’t exclusive — all are welcome at this table.
