There is something irresistible about the British coastline.

The Victorians clearly felt it too. With the advent of rail travel making it easier to reach the UK’s shores, they built row upon row of glorious homes all along the coast.

While these grand homes would have once been the preserve of the wealthy, there are plenty of elegant coastal townhouses that are now within the realm of affordability.

Here are some coastal properties currently on the market — all for under £500,000.

Margate, Kent: £415,000

This recently renovated three-bedroom townhouse sits right on Margate seafront with wonderful views of the beach, water, and harbour. The town has undergone significant regeneration in recent years and ex-Londoners have gentrified some areas, bringing new life — and entertainment — to this part of the Kent coast.

Penzance, Cornwall: £495,000

On the Cornish coast in Penzance, famous for its smugglers, is this resplendent four-bedroom, four-reception room Georgian townhouse with lots of space and charm, nestled just a short walk from the promenade.

Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex: £280,000

Out on the north Essex coast is Walton-on-the-Naze, a small town with sandy beaches, a pier, and plenty of surrounding countryside. This is a large and commanding six-bedroom Victorian townhouse on the front with sea views. It is liveable and retains several period features.

With some investment this large home could be restored to its former glory. At the current sale price, you would have plenty of room to achieve your dreams within a £500,000 budget.

Lytham, Lancashire: £495,000

Up in the north-west of England is this glorious Grade II listed early Victorian townhouse with five double bedrooms. Just a stone's throw from the sea, there are plenty of period features inside.

Weymouth, Dorset: £300,000

Down on the south coast is this magnificent four-bedroom late-Georgian townhouse close to the sandy beach of Weymouth. The charming period property is Grade II listed and boasts views of the sea, as well as a south-facing garden for all-day sunshine.

Weston-super-Mare, Somerset: £365,000

Perched on a hillside overlooking the sea at Weston-super-Mare, this beautifully presented four-bedroom Victorian family home is rich with original features.

Aberystwyth, Wales: £499,950

Far out on the western reaches of Wales is this five-bedroom Victorian townhouse along Aberystwyth promenade, benefiting from sea views. Period features meet modern touches throughout the property.

Scarborough, North Yorkshire: £495,000

In Scarborough sits this stunning, regal family home with buckets of character, reputedly built for Lord Halifax. The exquisite property near the coast has five bedrooms, as well as a butler's kitchen.
