Emilia Clarke joins stars calling for fair pay for NHS staff

Emilia Clarke appeared as Daenerys Targaryen for the final time as Game of Thrones came to an end this year. On top of that, the actor also found herself as a talking point when she candidly opened up about the two brain aneurysms she suffered a few years ago that could've killed her. Thankfully, Clarke pulled through and she's gone on to have a festive box office hit with Last Christmas. (Jeff Spicer/BFC/Getty Images)

Emilia Clarke has lent her support to a campaign for fair pay for NHS workers.

The Game Of Thrones star posted a video to Instagram for International Thank You Day to express her gratitude to everyone working for the NHS, particularly during the coronavirus pandemic.

She said: “I just want to say a massive thank you to the NHS. Everyone who works at the NHS, from our beloved nurses, to the porters, to the caterers, to the surgeons, to the doctors, the psychotherapists. Everyone who works there – thank you.

“In these incredibly frightening times you are keeping us alive, so thank you.”

But Clarke wasn’t only posting to thank NHS workers – she also wanted to use the opportunity to ask for better pay for all of those working for the health service.

She continued: “And it seems only right that we talk about fair pay.

“I believe NHS workers should get what they deserve for doing all that they do for us.

“So please join me today in saying thank you to the NHS and demanding fair pay.”

A campaign for an “early and significant” pay rise for NHS staff began in 2020 as a result of the huge amount of extra work that staff had taken on during the pandemic.

Clarke pledged her support to the campaign by using its hashtags #WithNHSStaff and #fairpay.

Also using International Thank You Day as a prompt to support the NHS were radio DJ Edith Bowman and comedian Jo Brand, who is a former mental health nurse.

Brand shared a poem on the subject for the Royal College of Nurses and also called for a pay rise for NHS staff.
