Emma Corrin impressed everyone with her portrayal of Princess Diana in series 4 of The Crown, and now she's received her first Golden Globe to certify it. In last night's virtual ceremony Corrin was awarded the gong for for best performing actress in a TV drama, and during her acceptance speech the 25-year-old paid poignant tribute to Diana.

Towards the end of her speech, Emma Corrin directed her words to the late Princess of Wales herself, thanking her for all the lessons she had learned through immersing herself in the real woman throughout filming. "You've taught me compassion and empathy beyond any measure that I could ever imagine. On behalf of everyone who remembers you so fondly and passionately in our hearts, thank you."

In the first half of her acceptance speech, the actress appeared in total shock that she had won the award over fellow nominees Olivia Colman (also up for her part in The Crown), Jodie Comer, Laura Linney and Sarah Paulson. "Whaaaaat?!" she could be heard saying, as she nervously giggled her way through the words.

"Thank you to my Prince Charming Josh, I could not have done this without you," she added, referencing Josh O'Connor who played Prince Charles in seasons 3 and 4 of the Netflix series, and who also won his Golden Globes category for best performing actor in a TV drama. "Thank you for making every single day by my side a complete joy," she said.

After spending months researching the Princess of Wales, learning about the woman she was and then playing her on screen, Emma Corrin previously shared her thoughts on Princess Diana, and the similarities she saw between the late royal and her daughter-in-law, Meghan Markle.

In an interview with Town and Country, Corrin drew a comparison between the way they have both famously been hounded negatively by the press. "You just want to shake these tabloids and say, can’t you see history repeating itself?" she said.
