England ready to host more Euro 2020 games if required by Uefa

The Football Association has said England are ready to host more matches for this summer’s Euros - if Uefa or other host cities require them to do so.

The current plan is for Euro 2020, which have been moved to this summer from last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, will take place across 12 countries.

The current climate, which includes travel restrictions and fans not being allowed into stadiums, is making that difficult but Uefa insist the plan is for the 12 hosts cities to remain.

Doubts have surfaced, however, about Bilbao, Dublin and Glasgow hosting games - which has raised the question of who would stage their matches instead.

The other cities are the obvious solution and the FA’s CEO, Mark Bullingham, has said England is ready to stage more games if required to.

“Let’s be clear, my understanding from Uefa is that they are still very keen on hosting it in 12 countries,” said Buckingham.

“But to answer your question, if for any reason Uefa and/or the country in question decided that they don’t want to host it, and came to us, I think we would be in the same position as a number of other countries of wanting to help Uefa and knowing that we’ve got the stadia and the Government support to do it.

“But fundamentally, my understanding is that Uefa still have the intention to run it in 12 countries.”
