Yahoo Finance England star’s Rugby World Cup hangs in the balance as hearing confirmed
World Rugby has confirmed that England back-row Tom Curry will appear before an independent Judicial Committee following his red card in his side’s 27-10 win over Argentina in the Rugby World Cup.
It was a nightmare start for England as after only three minutes Curry received a yellow card for review after a collision of heads with full-back Juan Cruz Mallia.
The card would be upgraded to red after the review in the bunker, handing the Red Rose yet another red card.
Hearing confirmed
The sport’s governing body confirmed the Englishman will face a disciplinary hearing, meaning further involvement in the tournament could be at risk for Curry.
“Tom Curry (England) will appear before an independent Judicial Committee having received a red card in England’s Rugby World Cup 2023 match against Argentina in Marseille on Saturday, 9 September,” the statement wrote.
“England’s Tom Curry will appear before an independent Judicial Committee in Paris having received a red card, following a review by the Foul Play Review Officer, in England’s Rugby World Cup 2023 Pool D match against Argentina in Marseille on Saturday, 9 September for an offence contrary to Law 9.13 (dangerous tackle). At the player’s request, the hearing will take place on Tuesday evening, 12 September.
“The independent Judicial Committee that will hear the matter will be chaired by Adam Casselden SC (Australia), joined by former players John Langford (Australia) and Jamie Corsi (Wales).”
Despite going a man down so early in the game England managed to rise to the occasion through fly-half George Ford, who produced a performance for the ages, scoring all 27 of his team’s points including three drop goals in the first period.
Michael Cheika and his Argentinian side will be kicking themselves after a very poor performance especially considering the length of time they had with an extra player on the field.
