Even before “Rogue One,” Disney is having a record-breaking year at the US box office

Darth Vader hasn’t even shown up yet, but Disney has already scored a box-office record without him.

Marvel’s Doctor Strange and Walt Disney Animation’s Moana helped propel Disney this weekend to a gross total of $2.49 billion at the US box office for 2016, according to Box Office Mojo. That includes releases from 2015 that remained in theaters this year, like Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Good Dinosaur. (Disney owns Marvel and its comic-book universe, Pixar and its animated classics, and Lucasfilm and its Star Wars and Indiana Jones films.)

The media conglomerate beat out previous record-holder Universal Studios, which rode to $2.45 billion on releases like Jurassic World, Furious 7, and Minions last year; it is at $1.25 billion this year.

Universal still holds the overseas record with $4.44 billion at the box office in 2015, when it became the first studio to cross the $4-billion mark, according to Deadline. Disney reportedly crept over that threshold this year with $4.08 billion in overseas box office totals so far, bringing its worldwide total to $6.57 billion as of Sunday.

The hotly anticipated theatrical release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story could help Disney snatch that crown from Universal as well. The first standalone Star Wars film is set to rollout in dozens of nations this year: it kicks off in France, Dubai, and others on Dec. 14, opens in countries including the UK, Brazil, Germany, and Russia on Dec. 15, and then heads to the US, Canada, Japan, and elsewhere on Dec. 16, according to Internet Movie Database. It’s expected to debut in China in 2017.

Based on ticket pre-sales, The Hollywood Reporter wrote that Rogue One is paced to open with more than $130 million domestically, which would make it the second-biggest December opening ever—after The Force Awakens.
