As Harry Styles grows older, he just adds threats. Not, we stress, in the who-you-looking-at way, but in the singer-dancer-actor way. Branching out to become the most successful solo star of that boyband seemingly wasn't enough for Styles, because he’s also become a style maven who can make Sunday school cardigans work and heads up campaigns for Gucci, while also moving into Hollywood, following up his debut in 2017’s Dunkirk with a slew of proper acting roles in proper, actorly films

He’s currently filming Don’t Worry Darling – where he's rumoured to be hooking up with his director, Olivia Wilde – but Styles has also recently been cast in a new film, which will see him play part of an LGBTQ+ love triangle, set primarily in Fifties Brighton.

Called My Policeman, and adapted from a 2012 novel from Bethan Roberts, Styles is not the only person of interest having been cast in the production. Emma Corrin, fresh from a Golden Globes-winning performance as Princess Di in The Crown, will also be taking the next step forward in her burgeoning career as part of the film's throwback throuple.

But with filming due to commence on the movie in April, we’re in for a bit of a wait before it hits the big screen. In the meantime, here’s everything we know about the production so far.

What’s the story of My Policeman?

The novel tells the story of Marion, a schoolteacher, who falls in love with her best friend’s older brother’s pal, Tom – the eponymous copper – and the pair end up marrying. But Marion has to share Tom with Patrick, a museum curator, who is the real love of Tom’s life. With homosexuality still illegal at this point in the UK, Tom and Patrick’s relationship has to be kept secret – until Marion’s jealousy finally spills out, to devastating ends.

The film starts in 1990, when Patrick arrives at Tom and Marion’s door, bringing back the past traumas of events 40 years ago.

Styles was spotted reading the book back in February.

Who’s playing who in the cast?

Styles will be playing Tom, the policeman, and while Lily James was initially touted to play Marion, it was announced by Deadline that the role had been won by Corrin.

While there’s still industry chatter about who will play the curator, Patrick – Joe Alwyn’s name keeps popping up, as does Normal People's Paul Mescal – the part is still to be cast.

The Tony and Olivier Award winner Michael Grandage will direct, while Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia) has adapted the screenplay.

Is there a My Policeman trailer?

No, obviously, as filming hasn’t started yet, but we’ll keep you updated as that changes. Same goes for the first look images as well – the costumes are bound to be another sartorial win for Styles, though.

When is My Policeman released?

Whoah, hold your horses. We wouldn’t even begin to expect the My Policeman to be released until the middle of 2022 at the earliest, or later if it gears up for an awards run. The film is being made as part of Amazon Studios, giving you just enough time to make sure your Prime membership is up to date.
