The Pursuit Of Love now has a trailer and release date

If The Pursuit Of Love rings a bell, it could be because you’ve read the classic Nancy Mitford novel of the same name. Or (possibly more likely) because it’s what Lily James and Dominic West had been filming in the months prior to those paparazzi photos hitting the headlines in September.

Scandal aside, if you miss Downton Abbey or couldn’t get enough of A Suitable Boy earlier this year, then The Pursuit Of Love has your name all over it. Yep, the BBC’s hard at work bringing us a romcom period drama set between the two World Wars and we’re ready to be obsessed. Here’s the lowdown on the plot, the cast and everything else you need to know…

Is there a trailer for The Pursuit Of Love?

BBC gave the first look at The Pursuit Of Love on 23rd April, releasing a trailer on Twitter. "Linda [Lily James] believes in love, and she's passionately romantic," the trailer reveals, before introducing us to her BFF Fanny, who is more about having fun than finding love.

Filming took place in Bath and Bristol throughout 2021 and to be honest, it looks very good, with an all-star cast. We're very excited to watch it.

What’s The Pursuit Of Love about?

It’s an adaptation of Nancy Mitford’s 1945 romcom novel set in the interwar years, following the aristocratic heroine Linda Radlett (Lily James, obvs) and her romantic adventures to find true love. Narrated by her “more proper” cousin Fanny Logan (Emily Beecham), Linda’s hunt for a husband sees her travelling from her manor home in Oxfordshire all the way to Paris in the Roaring Twenties – an adventure showcasing the stark difference between the two girls.

Based on the first book in a trilogy, the female-driven drama explores questions of growing up, freedom, friendship, sex and the mysteries of love.

Who stars in The Pursuit Of Love?

Alongside Lily and Emily are a host of famous faces: Dominic West (The Affair, The Wire) and Dolly Wells (Bridget Jones's Diary) play Linda’s strict parents, and Andrew Scott (Fleabag, our dreams) plays their neighbour, Lord Merlin. Fanny’s mother, nicknamed The Bolter for her own list of romances, is played by Emily Mortimer, who is wowing us with a hat-trick – as well as acting, she’s also written and directed the adaptation.

“I’ve always loved Nancy Mitford so when I was asked to adapt The Pursuit of Love it was impossible to say no,” Emily Mortimer said. “It’s an outrageously funny and honest story, whose central character – the wild, love-addicted Linda Radlett – still reads as a radical.”

Lily added,“It’s great to be working with Emily. Her brilliant scripts bring new life to this story - full of love, full of friendship, very moving and sad in places, but also funny and true to life."

Linda and Fanny’s suitors include Fabrice de Sauveterre, played by Assaad Bouab (Messiah, Call My Agent), Alfred Wincham, played by Shazad Latif (Penny Dreadful, Star Trek: Discovery) and Tony Kroesing, played by Freddie Fox (White House Farm, and soon The Crown).
