Ex-Chelsea Footballer Weah Runs For President

Former Chelsea striker George Weah is making a second attempt to become President of Liberia.

The 1995 World Player of The Year told supporters he was formally standing as a candidate in the 2017 election.

Current leader Ellen Johnson Sirleaf's final term ends next year and Weah said he had the "vision" to transform the country.

As he announced the bid, his supporters chanted: "George Weah is the man we want, George Weah is the man we want."

He pledged to increase the national budget, work towards religious harmony, and support vocational education.

Weah has long held political ambitions in his West African homeland and formed the Congress for Democratic Change party.

He lost to Ms Sirleaf in the 2005 election and failed in a bid to be vice-president in 2011. He is currently a senator.

Weah is one of Africa's best-ever footballers, with his former clubs including for Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan and Manchester City.

He won two league titles with AC Milan and is a triple African player of the year.

During his football career, Mr Weah became a UN goodwill ambassador, turning later to politics.
