FC Porto vs Liverpool - LIVE!

Liverpool made it successive wins to kick off their latest Champions League campaign after a familiar rout in Portugal.

Mohamed Salah and substitute Roberto Firmino both scored braces as the prolific Reds once again ran riot in a 5-1 romp at the Estadio do Dragao.

Sadio Mane also notched for Jurgen Klopp’s side and Curtis Jones delivered an inspired performance including three assists, while Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa endured a horror night between the posts.

Liverpool sit top of Group B after two rounds of fixtures, two points clear of Atletico Madrid, who triumphed 2-1 against 10-man AC Milan in Italy thanks to a 97th-minute penalty from former Anfield favourite Luis Suarez.

Liverpool also paid tribute to club legend and England 1966 World Cup winner Roger Hunt, who has died at the age of 83.

The players wore black armbands in tribute to Hunt, who notched a record 244 league goals during a memorable 11-year spell on Merseyside.

Jurgen Klopp reaction

22:37 , George Flood

“I am not that type of guy who points the finger only in this situation and forgets all the rest,” Klopp said of Liverpool’s defending as they failed to keep a clean sheet.

“There are a lot of good things, we can improve so much things, but for today it was for sure good enough”.

On Sunday, Liverpool host Premier League title rivals Manchester City, who were beaten 2-0 away at Paris St Germain.

Klopp said: “It always helps, but against City it does not help alone, we need more things than only momentum. We need to play better than we did tonight, that is clear anyway. It will be a completely different game.

“City will want to strike back for sure, but we are at home finally after a few games (playing away) without our crowd, so let’s give it a go.”

Jurgen Klopp reaction

22:32 , George Flood

"Performance wise, it was good in a lot of moments.

"We could see that Porto watched our last (Premier League) game against Brentford - they started pretty direct and we had struggles again, but we got it sorted on the pitch step by step during the game.

"We scored maybe not the most wonderful goals in the first half, but they were important ones."

Jordan Henderson reaction

22:18 , George Flood

Henderson felt Liverpool could have come away from Estadio do Dragao with a clean sheet.

"We will be disappointed to concede as I thought we were dominant throughout the game," he said on BT Sport 3.

"We scored some brilliant goals and played good football, so we have got to be pleased as it is a difficult place to come."

It was Henderson's 400th appearance for Liverpool.

The England midfielder said: "I can't describe the feeling. I still get it every time I put the shirt on. It's an honour and hopefully I can do it many more times in the future."

Jordan Henderson reaction

22:18 , George Flood

“It is definitely not job done, because there is four games still to play and it is a very tough group,” the Liverpool captain told BT Sport.

“But we have had two very good performances against Milan and now Porto, we have applied ourselves very well and got the results we deserved.

“It is a good start, but far from over.”

FC Porto 1-5 Liverpool

Another romp for the Reds in Portugal.

Salah and Firmino at the double, with Mane also on target and a hat-trick of assists from Jones.

An absolute nightmare from Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa.

21:49 , George Flood

89 mins: Diogo Costa helps a free-kick over the bar before at the other end, Robertson gets around on the cover to thwart Vieira.

Three minutes of added time signalled.

21:48 , George Flood

87 mins: Jota will have been disappointed not to register his name on the scoresheet tonight.

He’s had the chances!

Divock Origi is on for the final few minutes.

21:46 , George Flood

85 mins: Jones deserves a goal tonight, but his latest bending strike is kept out by Diogo Costa.

GOAL! FC Porto 1-5 Liverpool | Roberto Firmino 83'

21:42 , George Flood

83 mins: Liverpool’s fifth is given after the VAR checks it for an absolute age.

The Brazilian - who is just onside - calmly rifles in a second from close range after Jones’ strike deflects off Cardoso.

It’s a rout.

GOAL! FC Porto 1-4 Liverpool | Roberto Firmino 78'

21:36 , George Flood

78 mins: Diogo Costa, you have had an absolute nightmare tonight.

Jones knocks a ball up towards Firmino, who wins it ahead of Marcano.

There shouldn’t be too much danger yet, only that the goalkeeper has for some reason decided to come racing miles out with no chance whatsoever of getting to the ball.

Firmino instantly shoots towards an empty goal and Costa tears back to claw it out, but that was clearly over the line.

Awful, bizarre, inexplicable goalkeeping. Just rotten.

GOAL! FC Porto 1-3 Liverpool | Mehdi Taremi 75’

21:34 , George Flood

75 mins: A lifeline for Porto!

The Iranian plans a strong header beyond Alisson.

A glimmer of hope.

21:33 , George Flood

70 mins: Into the final 20 minutes and it’s still Liverpool pushing for further goals, with a couple of hairy moments for Porto averted.

Henderson now heads off, with Oxlade-Chamberlain on.

21:25 , George Flood

66 mins: Gomez, Firmino and Minamino are all on for the final 25 minutes or so.

Milner, Salah (on a hat-trick) and Mane make way.

Porto send on their other Pepe, the former Gremio winger.

21:23 , George Flood

63 mins: Big chances at both ends!

Luis Diaz does very well to dig out a cutback for Vitinha from the byline, but the latter’s low strike is well saved by Alisson.

At the other end, Jota looks likely to power in Liverpool’s fourth after shifting the ball onto his left foot, but he slices his shot into the side netting.

Klopp is preparing some changes with Sunday’s visit of Manchester City to Anfield in mind.

GOAL! FC Porto 0-3 Liverpool | Mohamed Salah 60'

21:19 , George Flood

60 mins: Three for Liverpool and two for Salah.

The impressive Jones wins the ball back in midfield and drives the Reds forward, cutting inside and laying it on a plate for Salah, who calmly takes a touch before slotting beyond Diogo Costa.

It’s no less than Klopp’s dominant team deserve. And I doubt they are done yet.

21:14 , George Flood

55 mins: Zaidu is replaced by Wendell.

Uribe also makes way for ex-Wolves loanee Vitinha.

21:14 , George Flood

54 mins: Liverpool are all over Porto again now as Jota’s stinging drive is parried by Diogo Costa.

Mane then looks to be in but he can’t finish and the offside flag is raised.

Two more changes coming from Porto.

21:10 , George Flood

52 mins: What on earth is Corona doing there?!

A dismal defensive header following a searching cross from Milner almost gifts Liverpool a third goal, but Diogo Costa does well to thwart Jota with his feet.

21:09 , George Flood

49 mins: Salah is furious with Robertson, whose drive from a tough angle is parried by Diogo Costa after the energetic Scottish left-back had again bombed on beyond Mane.

Salah would have likely had a tap-in at the back post.

A couple of iffy challenges from Fabinho early in this second half and he’s probably lucky not to have been cautioned.

21:06 , George Flood

47 mins: Much more urgency from the outset from Porto in this second half as they look to work Alisson.

A stray arm from Van Dijk in an aerial tussle catches Cardoso, but he’s not down for long.

Second half underway

21:03 , George Flood

The second half is underway at the Estadio do Dragao.

A second Porto sub at the break, with former Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic replacing striker Martinez.

A change in shape from Conceicao as he looks to get his side going.

Mane haunts Porto again

20:54 , George Flood

Half-time

20:49 , George Flood

Porto 0-2 Liverpool

The Reds on easy street once again in Portugal after goals from Salah and Mane.

You’d back them to make this more emphatic after the interval.

Sergio Conceicao won’t be at all happy with his goalkeeper.

GOAL! FC Porto 0-2 Liverpool | Sadio Mane 45'

20:47 , George Flood

45 mins: There’s the second goal on the stroke of half-time.

Jones keeps the ball in play out on the left and finds Fabinho, who knocks it out to Milner on the opposite flank.

It’s a peach of a cross from Milner and Diogo Costa inexplicably leaves it, feeling that Mane is offside.

But he isn’t and has the easiest of tap-ins to double the advantage.

Shocking from the Porto ‘keeper, who also should have done better with the initial shot that led to the first goal.

20:44 , George Flood

42 mins: That’s a really poor challenge from Toni Martinez on Mane to give Liverpool a free-kick in a great position just outside the Porto box.

How was that not a booking?!

It’s a well-rehearsed routine involving Milner and Salah, with Henderson letting fly with a lovely effort that is tipped over by Diogo Costa.

20:42 , George Flood

40 mins: Salah causes Porto more problems before finding Henderson, who looks to be shaping up to have a pop from distance, before surprising his team-mates with a lofted cross out towards Jones.

All of Liverpool’s attackers are offside as a result, and Jones knows it.

20:40 , George Flood

38 mins: Porto manage to maintain a spell of possession and put together their best move for some time, but Luis Diaz’s attempt to find the far corner with a low, bending shot fails as Alisson easily saves.

But encouragement and a sight of goal nonetheless.

20:37 , George Flood

35 mins: Liverpool are still piling on the pressure and easily getting into that Porto box, but their final ball is just lacking at present, with the likes of Jota, Mane and Salah all guilty.

Porto mount a rare attempt at a break but there’s nowhere to go for Iran’s Mehdi Taremi down the right-hand side.

20:34 , George Flood

32 mins: Henderson sees a long-range effort blocked before the confident Jones bends another strike into the arms of Diogo Costa.

20:31 , George Flood

29 mins: Liverpool are pushing hard for a second as we approach the half-hour mark, with Porto struggling to get out or put a foot on the ball.

Mane’s low cross bounces behind off Marcano and the ensuing corner from Robertson is dealt with.

20:30 , George Flood

It’s also Salah’s sixth in his last seven Champions League appearances.

The man is a goal machine.

20:27 , George Flood

25 mins: Mane has acres of space to fly down that left flank and pick out the overlapping Robertson, who duly lays it back for Jota.

The former Porto man’s first strike is blocked before his follow-up attempt is pushed over by Diogo Costa.

The second goal feels like a mere formality for Liverpool at this stage... and likely a few more to boot.

20:24 , George Flood

22 mins: It had been a bright start from Porto in places, but Liverpool are absolutely dominating now.

Salah cuts back for Henderson, whose flick strikes the hand of Marcano from close range.

The Reds skipper wants a penalty, but Russian referee Sergey Karasev isn’t interested.

That would have been extremely harsh.

GOAL! FC Porto 0-1 Liverpool | Mohamed Salah 18’

20:20 , George Flood

18 mins: Curtis Jones cuts in from the left flank and runs at Jesus Manuel Corona before bending a shot that is pushed back into the danger area by goalkeeper Diogo Costa.

Salah is on hand to tuck home the rebound from close range.

Deadlock broken. The Porto ‘keeper will be kicking himself... you’ve got to divert that elsewhere.

20:18 , George Flood

16 mins: Liverpool struggle to clear their lines and Mateus Uribe tries his luck with a fierce drive that is well blocked.

The Reds counter quickly, but Porto get numbers back in double quick time and the danger is averted... for now.

20:17 , George Flood

15 mins: Cardoso now in the wars after an aerial tussle with Mane.

He’ll be fine to continue.

Mane is then penalised for handball, giving Porto the chance to deliver a free-kick from the right flank.

20:15 , George Flood

14 mins: TV cameras show a big ice pack being applied to the upset Otavio’s hamstring.

He clearly believes it to be a bad one.

20:14 , George Flood

12 mins: It’s midfielder Otavio who has picked up an issue.

He is replaced by Fabio Vieira.

Another key blow for the hosts.

Otavio looks distraught on the bench as he is consoled by team-mates.

Not immediately obvious what the issue is.

20:13 , George Flood

11 mins: A lot of early movement on that Porto bench, with Sergio Conceicao set to make an early change.

He seems to have changed his mind on who will be entering the fray, but there is an early substitution imminent.

Porto have already lost Pepe to injury in the warm-up, remember.

20:11 , George Flood

8 mins: Liverpool aren’t quite on the same wavelength during their latest jaunt forward as Henderson then has to scramble back and check a pacey break from Luis Diaz.

20:08 , George Flood

6 mins: More Liverpool pressure comes to nothing as Porto now break, with Matip rising to head clear Sergio Oliveira’s cross following a promising burst forward from the lively Zaidu.

Luis Diaz’s hopeful low strike deflects off Van Dijk before being safely gathered by Alisson.

20:06 , George Flood

5 mins: Important defending from Zaidu Sanusi to prevent Salah from connecting with Robertson’s probing cross from the left following a dangerous Liverpool counter.

20:04 , George Flood

3 mins: A quiet start to proceedings as Liverpool patiently try to engineer an early chance, with Milner charging forward from right-back to support Henderson and Salah.

Porto yet to settle as the visitors dominate possession.

Kick-off

20:01 , George Flood

We are underway!

Will it be another easy night for Liverpool in Porto?

19:59 , George Flood

A nightmare for Porto as Pepe was injured in the warm-up.

Fabio Cardoso starts instead.

19:57 , George Flood

Here come the teams in Porto.

A decent atmosphere being generated by the home contingent at the Estadio do Dragao.

Klopp unconcerned by Liverpool’s defensive lapses

19:48 , George Flood

Liverpool are yet to lose this season and have scored three goals in six out of eight games across all competitions so far, yet concerns over their defensive prowess have been raised despite the long-awaited return to fitness of Virgil van Dijk.

And while Klopp wants to see improvement on that front after the come-from-behind win over AC Milan and 3-3 draw at Brentford, he insists he is not overly concerned just yet.

"It's not that much of a concern because I don't think you should make these things bigger than they are - but we have to show a reaction, that's for sure," the German said.

"It's really tricky to win a football game when you are not defending on your highest level and that's what we didn't do.

"The common opinion is it's only about the last line but we had a problem in general with our defending. That's why Brentford caused us problems and it wasn't good.

"We have to improve in that department for sure but now is not the moment to be concerned.

"We spoke about it and we know we cannot do it like that. I think we have sorted it but we have to show it.”

Alexander Arnold a big doubt for Man City clash

19:36 , George Flood

Speaking to BT Sport ahead of kick-off in Porto, Klopp has confirmed that Alexander-Arnold is a big doubt for Sunday’s clash with Manchester City.

“Yeah, unfortunately [it’s an injury],” he said.

“It was shortly after training [on Monday], Trent went in a little bit earlier but it didn’t look serious. We did further assessment and in the end it was serious. So, he is out for today for sure, he didn’t travel with us.

“And it doesn’t look great for the City game as well. It’s a muscle thing. We thought he was just a bit tired from the [Brentford] game but it was more and now we have to deal with that.”

Milner, remember, also deputised for Alexander-Arnold earlier this month for the Premier League win over Crystal Palace when the latter withdrew due to illness.

Klopp will hope to have his influential first-choice right-back fit and ready for the visit of Manchester City on Sunday.

Henderson milestone

19:13 , George Flood

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson makes his 400th appearance for the club at the Estadio do Dragao tonight.

Pepe starts for Porto

19:05 , George Flood

So Pepe is fit to start for Porto after all.

He partners Ivan Marcano at centre-back with Chancel Mbemba suspended.

Porto’s central defenders have a combined aged of 72.

The likes of Toni Martinez, Zaidu Sanusi and Sergio Oliveira also return for the hosts after last week’s 2-1 Primeira Liga win at Gil Vicente.

Former Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic is on the bench.

Teams in full

19:01 , George Flood

Porto: Diogo Costa, Corona, Kleper Pepe, Marcano, Sanusi, Otavio, Sergio Oliveira, Uribe, Diaz, Taremi, Martinez

Subs: Marchesin, Fabio Cardoso, Francisco Conceicao, Eduardo Pepe, Grujic, Manafa, Vitinha, Wendell, Joao Mario, Bruno Costa, Evanilson, Vieira

Liverpool: Alisson, Milner, Matip, van Dijk, Robertson, Jones, Fabinho, Henderson, Salah, Jota, Mane

Subs: Konate, Keita, Firmino, Gomez, Adrian, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Minamino, Tsimikas, Origi, Phillips, Kelleher, Williams

Milner replaces injured Alexander-Arnold

18:57 , George Flood

James Milner starts in place of the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold in Liverpool’s only change from the 3-3 draw at Brentford.

Naby Keita is fit enough for the bench after his foot issue, while Neco Williams and Nat Phillips are also among the substitutes.

Klopp resists the urge to rest players with that clash against Manchester City looming.

Roger Hunt: Understated but never undervalued

18:43 , George Flood

Away from Anfield, most people remember Roger Hunt MBE, for that moment in a stellar playing career when, for once, he spurned a goalscoring opportunity, writes Ken Dyer.

In the first period of extra-time in the 1966 World Cup Final against West Germany, Hunt’s England strike partner Geoff Hurst’s shot struck the crossbar and rebounded downwards.

Was it a goal, or wasn’t it?

Geoff Hurst wasn’t sure but Roger Hunt, who died yesterday aged 83, had no doubts.

Hurst takes up the story in his autobiography, 1966 And All That.

“I connected beautifully with the ball, but in doing so toppled over,” he wrote. “I therefore probably had the worst view in the ground when the ball struck the underside of the bar and bounced down on the line.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

“My next clear memory is of Roger Hunt, to my left, halting his forward run and raising his arm in the air. Had there been any doubt about the validity of the goal in Roger’s mind, he would have continued his run and supplied the finishing touch. It would have been the easiest thing for him to do.

“Roger was a great player and the natural instinct of any striker in those circumstances is to put the ball in the net if he feels it necessary.

“I sometimes wish that Roger had applied the coup de grace and tapped the ball into the net. It would have avoided so much controversy.”

Team news on the way very shortly!

Klopp: Hunt was second to no one for Liverpool

18:19 , George Flood

Liverpool have been paying tribute to Hunt since the sad news broke earlier today, with Klopp commenting that he was “second to no one” in terms of importance to the club.

“It’s really sad news and our thoughts and our love go to his family,” Klopp said.

“Unfortunately, it feels too frequent in this moment we are saying farewell to these giants of our club.

“Roger Hunt comes second to no-one in his importance in the history of Liverpool FC, that much is clear.

“To be the goalscoring catalyst of the Shankly team to actually achieve promotion and then go on to win those precious league titles and the FA Cup puts him in a bracket of LFC legends who are responsible for making us the club we are today. Not only that, he was also a World Cup winner in 1966, too.

 (Liverpool FC via Getty Images)

“I am told the Kop christened him 'Sir Roger' for all his achievements. A goalscorer who never stopped working to help his teammates; I believe he would have fit in well within our current team.

“So, it is Sir Roger we will remember, honour and pay tribute to over the coming days.

“You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

Roger Hunt tributes

18:04 , George Flood

Liverpool’s players will wear black armbands in Porto tonight in tribute to the late, great Roger Hunt, who has died at the age of 83.

The England 1966 World Cup winner remains the club’s all-time leading league goalscorer, notching 244 in a prolific 11-year stint between 1958-69.

Only Ian Rush has bettered his total Liverpool haul of 286, while Mo Salah recently became the only player to reach a century faster - in one fewer game (151).

Hunt - Liverpool’s top scorer in eight successive seasons - won two First Division titles and the FA Cup at Anfield before joining Bolton.

A true Reds and England legend.

Standard Sport prediction

However, normal service will be resumed in Portugal with the Reds extending their unbeaten record against Porto.

Liverpool to win 3-0.

Porto team news: Pepe doubtful

17:51 , George Flood

Porto have notable defensive issues ahead of Liverpool’s visit, with head coach Sergio Conceicao set to make a late call on the fitness of Pepe, who remains a key player at the age of 38.

Meanwhile, ex-Newcastle centre-back Chancel Mbemba is suspended after his late sending off against Atletico on matchday one.

Neco Williams is also recovered from injury, but Harvey Elliott (ankle) and Thiago Alcantara (thigh) remain sidelined.

Jurgen Klopp may be tempted to make changes this evening with Manchester City the visitors to Anfield in a key Premier League showdown on Sunday afternoon.

The Champions League returns this week with some high-profile encounters on matchday two.

Our focus here is on events at the Estadio do Dragao in Portugal, where early Premier League leaders Liverpool will be favourites to make it two wins out of two at the summit of Group B after their thrilling 3-2 comeback victory over AC Milan a fortnight ago.

The Reds have notched up some big scorelines on this ground over recent seasons, 5-0 and 4-1, though FC Porto showed great defensive mettle to earn a goalless draw at Atletico Madrid on matchday one despite being reduced to 10 men late on.

Tonight Liverpool will remember the great Roger Hunt, whose death at the age of 83 was confirmed this afternoon.

Hunt is Liverpool’s all-time leading league goalscorer and famously was part of England’s 1966 World Cup-winning side.
