Channel 5 has released the first trailer for the upcoming miniseries Anne Boleyn, starring The Last Ship's Jodie Turner-Smith, which you can check out above.

The trailer gives us our first look at the period drama as we see the historical figure try to bear a son as an heir to the throne, while teasing we don't yet know her true story. We also see Boleyn as she prepares to be beheaded by order of her husband Henry VIII, played by Game of Thrones' Mark Stanley.

"Delving deeper into Anne Boleyn's immense strengths while examining her fatal weaknesses and vulnerabilities, [writer] Eve [Hedderwick Turner]'s scripts immediately captured my imagination," Turner-Smith previously said of the role.

The three-part series is described as a "psychological thriller" that tells the story of Boleyn from her own perspective for the first time.

The synopsis reads: "Because history is written by the victors, we have never heard her side of the story.

"This series will take you inside her mind and follow events from her perspective. Anne openly dares to see herself as the King’s equal. She sees a future in which her daughter – a female! – could rule. She refuses to fall in line. But these are dangerous attributes in the Tudor court – a competitive world riddled with misogyny and machismo."

Starring alongside Turner-Smith and Stanley are I May Destroy You's Paapa Essiedu, Amanda Burton (White House Farm), Thalissa Teixeira (Two Weeks to Live), Barry Ward (White Lines) and Hamilton's Jamael Westman.

The series was written by newcomer Eve Hedderwick Turner and is directed by Lynsey Miller (Deadwater Fell, Doing Money, The Boy With The Topknot).

Channel 5 commissioner Ben Frow previously said of the series: "This project re-frames her story as a propulsive psychological thriller, told from a new perspective, with top talent like Jodie Turner-Smith attached. It was simply too irresistible to say no to."

Anne Boleyn will arrive on Channel 5 later this year.
