Some might say that Olivia Colman needs a holiday, what with all the work she's been doing recently. In her upcoming Netflix movie, The Lost Daughter, she gets exactly that.

Ahead of The Lost Daughter's release in December, the first trailer for Maggie Gyllenhaal's directorial debut is here – and it's as captivating as the drama's premise.

Based on Elena Ferrante's novel of the same name, The Lost Daughter follows Colman's Leda Caruso, a professor whose sun-soaked vacation triggers long-buried memories from her past.

Starring Fifty Shades of Grey's Dakota Johnson, Normal People's Paul Mescal, Chernobyl's Jessie Buckley, and Westworld's Ed Harris – among others – the psychological thriller bagged itself a coveted 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes when the first reviews dropped (and is still sitting on a very respectable 94%).

"Alone on a seaside vacation, Leda becomes consumed with a young mother and daughter as she watches them on the beach," the official synopsis reads.

"Unnerved by their compelling relationship, (and their raucous and menacing extended family), Leda is overwhelmed by her own memories of the terror, confusion and intensity of early motherhood.

"An impulsive act shocks Leda into the strange and ominous world of her own mind, where she is forced to face the unconventional choices she made as a young mother and their consequences."

Opening up about his experience working alongside The Crown's Colman on the movie, Paul Mescal recently admitted he was a little star-struck by the actress.

Calling her an "amazing human being", Paul gushed: "She's the greatest of the greatest. Yeah, [there are] a lot of 'pinch yourself' moments when you're working with that kind of clientele."

The Lost Daughter will be released in select cinemas in the US, UK and elsewhere on December 17, before arriving on Netflix on December 31
