Yahoo Finance 5 men charged over Eu Tong Sen Street rioting
SINGAPORE — Five men were charged on Tuesday (22 December) over a rioting incident at Clarke Quay in the late hours of Saturday.
The five men charged were Victor Alexander Arumugam, 27; Mathan Raj Kunasegaran, 26; Shankar Ganesh Velusamy, 33; Lashwin Kumar Manimaran, 22; and Sahadev Kumar Thritraj, 30.
All were arrested, along with a 22-year-old woman, for their suspected involvement in connection to a case of rioting with a deadly weapon along Eu Tong Sen Street on Saturday at about 10.40pm.
Victor, Mathan, Shankar and Laswhin were each handed one charge of being a member of an unlawful assembly whose common object was to commit affray with a person known as Lokess Sittrasu, outside a restaurant named “The Tipsy Cow”.
Sahadev was charged with voluntarily causing grievous hurt to a person known as Norhairul Nizam Abdul Karim by using a knife to stab him, in common intention with Victor and another person.
All five will return to court on 29 December for further mentions of their case.
Others who were involved
Another two men, aged 26 and 31, said to be involved in the same incident, will be charged for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous means and rioting with a deadly weapon respectively on Wednesday, according to the police. Investigations against the 22-year-old woman are ongoing.
Four men were charged for the offence of rioting armed with a deadly weapon on Monday. The four were Alim Mohamed Zamrabi, 34; Norhairul Nizam Abdul Karim, 40; Muhammad Tarmizi Mohd Jailani, 21; and Muhammad Ashik Abdullah, 28.
In total, 12 individuals have been arrested and nine have been charged so far.
Police said in a news release on Sunday that they were alerted to a fight between two groups of people along Eu Tong Sen Street at about 10.40pm. Officers at the scene found and attended to two injured people – a 27-year-old woman and her 36-year-old male companion – at the location.
Suspects from the two groups had fled the scene by the time police arrived and the injured parties were helped by some members of the public. Both the man and woman were taken while conscious to the Singapore General Hospital (SGH).
A 40-year-old man was later arrested in the vicinity of Carpenter Street for his suspected involvement in the fight. Police said the man was found injured and hiding in a dark corner of a back alley, and was also taken conscious to SGH.
Preliminary investigations show that the fight started as a dispute between the groups at a nearby restaurant.
If convicted of being a member of an unlawful assembly, each man may be jailed up to two years, or fined, or both. If convicted of voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous means, a person may be jailed for life or up to 15 years, with caning or a fine. The offence of rioting with a deadly weapon carries a jail term of up to 10 years and caning.
