Yahoo Finance Flight attendant reveals the 'secret' reason why the crew greets you during boarding: 'Bet you don't know what we are doing'
A flight attendant on TikTok is racking up millions of views after revealing the real reason why the flight crew is always greeting passengers as they’re boarding.
Kat Kamalani is TikTok’s favorite flight attendant, having previously exposed things like her favorite hotel hacks, which parts of the plane you shouldn’t touch and why you should never drink plane water.
In a recent video, Kamalani shared “a secret you didn’t know” about why the flight crew greets you while you board the plane — and why they walk up and down the aisle before takeoff.
“Bet you don’t know what we are doing,” she captioned the video.
“When you’re walking on the airplane and you see our happy, smiling face, we’re actually looking you up and down and we’re trying to find our A.B.P.’s,” Kamalani said in the clip.
“A.B.P.” refers to “able-bodied people” or “able-bodied passengers.” Flight attendants make note of these individuals because they could help out during an emergency.
“[They might be] military personnel, firefighters, nurses, doctors,” she added. “So in case of an emergency — like a medical emergency or [if] we’re going to land the plane or there’s a security breach — we know who’s on our plane and who can help us.”
On a darker note, Kamalani said that another part of the ritual is to look for things that don’t belong on the flight — and she doesn’t just mean liquids that somehow got past the TSA.
“We’re looking for human trafficking,” she said. “It happens a lot in the industry and our passengers’ safety is our No. 1 priority, so we’re just looking for things that look off.”
Many commenters had no idea this was the case. Some asked Kamalani for clarification as to how the staff can tell if someone’s a nurse or doctor.
“Some say, ‘Hey, I’m a doctor in seat 3A just in case,’ which we appreciate,” Kamalani commented.
“Them looking at me like … ‘OK useless,'” another commenter joked.
“I always thought you were looking at me thinking I don’t belong in first class,” another said.
