NEW YORK, June 23 (Reuters) - The British pound rose to its highest level of 2016 on Thursday after the release of a referendum day poll showed voters in Britain had voted to stay in the European Union.
A poll by YouGov (LSE: YOU.L - news) for Sky News showed that respondents had voted 52 percent to 48 percent to remain in the 28-country bloc.
"Today YouGov conducted a survey, going back to the same people we spoke to yesterday to find out how they actually voted," said Joe Twyman, YouGov's Head of Political and Social Research, on the company's website. "The survey found a small move to Remain and based on these results we expect the United Kingdom to continue as a member of the European Union."
Sterling rose by around 0.75 percent to $1.4998 against the dollar, its highest since Dec. 17. (Reporting by Dion Rabouin)
