Former Man Utd striker Teddy Sheringham suggests Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is afforded ‘a lot of protection’

Former Man Utd striker Teddy Sheringham suggests Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is afforded ‘a lot of protection’

Former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham has claimed underfire manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been afforded “a lot of protection” from ex-teammates in the media.

Much has been made about Gary Neville’s reaction to Sunday’s humiliating loss at home to Liverpool at Old Trafford.

While the Sky Sports pundit - who played with the United boss for eleven years during the club’s last great heyday - has never called for a manager to be sacked, there appears to be some sort of desire to get him to suggest Solskjaer should be relieved of his duties.

The Norweigian’s standing as a club legend, of course, cannot be disputed. He is, after all, the man who scored perhaps the most iconic goal in United history and has improved the morale following the dark days of the Jose Mourinho era, leading them to second in the Premier League last season.

Still, despite an ambitious recruitment drive over the course of the summer, United now look further away from winning the title than last time out, leading to reports suggesting former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte had been contacted about the idea of replacing Solskjaer.

Speaking to 888Sport, Sheringham - who scored seconds before Solskjaer in the 1999 Champions League final before setting his former teammate up for the famous winner at the Camp Nou - did reveal he thought the United manager was being protected by those who played with him.

“Does Ole get a fair deal?” said the former England international when asked about Solskjaer’s treatment in the media.

“Yes, he gets a very fair deal.

“You’re managing Manchester United and you’ve stayed in the job for a long time and you haven’t won anything.

“Depending on how you look at it, he’s had a very fair deal to still be in a job.

“It does look like he’s been getting the club to progress, as a team, but that has faltered at the start of this season and that’s why so many have question marks against him.

“There has been a lot of protection for Ole from his former teammates and I’ve been just the same but he’s not stupid and he knows that the noose is tightening.

“You just hope that it doesn’t happen and he finds a way out. He’ll certainly keep fighting because he’s a winner after all.”
