Frasier’s Kelsey Grammer Explains the Revival’s New Version of ‘Tossed Salads and Scrambled Eggs’ — Watch Video

Frasier is back — and so is one of the most distinctive closing theme songs in TV history.

Fans know that every episode of Frasier ends with star Kelsey Grammer singing a jazzy tune titled “Tossed Salads and Scrambled Eggs,” and in the new Paramount+ revival — which just wrapped up its first season — the song is back, with Grammer recording an update on the classic. So why did they decide to do a new version?

“Because he’s not the old version,” Grammer tells TVLine in the video above. “Frasier is not the old version. He’s not that guy.” He notes that the original version was “more brash, meaning more brass in it as well. Not as sophisticated, not as wise and a little more in your face.” But he wanted the new recording “to be more seductive, like, ‘You guys know this. You know what we’re doing.’ And to sort of say we’ve mellowed a bit.”

He points out a key lyric change as well: “It just hit me a week before we were going to record it: I suddenly went, ‘Oh wait, he’s not doing a call-in show. Life is calling again.’ And that’s the one.” He adds that he and the song’s producers “record a whole bunch of different ad-libs, and then lay them in when you want to.” So we’ll hear seasonal additions like “Merry Christmas, America” in this week’s holiday-themed season finale.
