Friday preview: Eurogroup puts Greece on the table at Riga meeting

LONDON (ShareCast) - Greece will dominate the agenda on Friday when Eurozone finance ministers gather in Riga. Thomas Wieser, who heads the Eurogroup Working Group, said Greece would not present a list of economic reforms at the meeting as had been expected by officials.

He said Greece would provide the list, to be approved by creditors to unlock further aid, in May and should be able to stay solvent until June.

"The clock is ticking. There won't be a new list in Riga, but over the course of May it must finally be reached," he told Austrian broadcaster ORF late on Tuesday.

"The liquidity situation in Greece is already a little tight, but it should be sufficient into June." If Greece fails to reach a deal with creditors, it would lead to a default and a possible exit from the Eurozone.

Greece owes nearly €1bn to the International Monetary Fund in May. It also has to repay €1.4bn of Treasury bills on 8 May followed by the same amount on 15 May.

"There is still the issue of how Greece will fund itself beyond the initially proposed 30 April deal-deadline, especially since the cash-unlocking reforms list Athens needs to provide is nowhere to be seen," said Connor Campbell, financial analyst at Spreadex. "The only good news for Greece is that the Eurozone looks like it is trying to bend as far as it can before breaking to ensure the country doesn't leave the currency union any time soon."
