Froome On Brink Of Third Tour De France Title

Britain's Chris Froome is on the verge of winning his third Tour de France title.

The Team Sky cyclist is leading the race going into the final stage, which is largely a processional ride ending on the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

Only a disaster can now deny Froome another Tour victory after previously triumphing in 2013 and 2015.

He comfortably held onto his lead of more than four minutes over Frenchman Romain Bardet on Saturday's 146.5km stage from Megeve to Morzine in the Alps.

The 31-year-old star started the 20th stage with a bandage on his right knee following a crash on Friday.

On a stormy and rainy day in the Alps, he stayed safe on the slippery descents, well protected by his team-mates, and crossed the line with a smile of relief on his face.

The penultimate leg was won by Spaniard Jon Izaguirre.

Froome is set to become only the eighth man, not including the disgraced Lance Armstrong, to win three or more Tours.

He is also the first to successfully defend his Tour title since Miguel Indurain in 1995.

Froome will join Philippe Thys, Louison Bobet and Greg LeMond on three titles.

And he will now have his eyes set on five-time winners Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Jacques Anquetil and Indurain.
