'I'll refund your 15 bucks if you don’t like it': 'Frozen 2' star Kristen Bell confident the sequel was worth the wait

Six years later, one of the most successful animated films is officially back for its highly-anticipated sequel - Frozen 2.

The film looks back in time and answers questions about why and how Elsa (voiced by Idina Menzel) has powers, something that wasn’t addressed in the original Frozen. The search for these answers, after Elsa starts to hear a voice calling her from far away, leads her, sister Anna (voiced by Kristen Bell), Kristoff (voiced by Jonathan Groff) and Olaf (voiced by Josh Gad) on an epic journey “into the unknown” through an enchanted forest.

Joining the cast is Evan Rachel Wood, who voices Queen Iduna, mother of Elsa and Anna, allowing audiences to see the secrets of her past and how they shape her daughters’ destinies.

This is Us star Sterling K. Brown is also in Frozen 2, voicing Lieutenant Destin Mattias who has been trapped in the enchanted forest for 30 years after his effort to protect Arendelle against their enemy, the Northuldra.

Is the sequel worth the wait?

For adults and children alike who loved the original Frozen, from the camaraderie between sisters to the infectious soundtrack, or the comedic stylizing of the ever-optimistic Olaf, the big question this time around is whether Frozen 2 can hold up to the original.

“I’ll refund your 15 bucks if you don’t like it, I’m that confident,” Bell told Yahoo Canada.

“They took a long time to bring it back because they wanted to do it the right way,” Menzel added.

Gad admits that he himself, like many fans of Frozen, had his own apprehensions about being involved in a sequel for such a successful and beloved film, especially for a musical.

“Frankly, I don’t know of a sequel to an iconic musical that’s ever worked, so that was a big source of concern for me,” Gad said. “Those nerves, that anxiety was immediately quashed the second the creative team sat me down and walked me through the big story arcs.”

The original film was initially commended for it’s focus on the sisterly-love between Elsa and Anna in the female-centric Frozen. Both Bell and Menzel said that as actors, they have certainly gravitated towards roles that enable them to portray layered, complex women - something that they admit has been generally lacking in television and film.

“Women haven’t been represented with the kind of complexities that I feel was deserving of them,” Bell said. “I look at my daughters and at four a six I see their complexity. I see when they’re super shy and I see when they’re incredibly powerful - that is a woman.”

“This idea that I get to play these characters that are about embracing what makes them so extraordinary in the world and not apologizing for that, and owning that and learning as a woman how to harness your power,...and for it be in a family movie and it to be led by two female characters is something that feels like we’re pioneers in that way,” Menzel said.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Frozen 2 was the highest-selling animated movie in its first day of presales on Atom Tickets and Fandango. Six years ago, Frozen was the highest-grossing animated film ever at US$1.2 billion worldwide, surpassed by Disney’s Lion King this year, and now all eyes will be on the box office to see if Frozen 2 can break that record.

Frozen 2 is out in theatres on Nov. 21
