FTSE 100 movers: TUI soars on strong first half results, supermarkets lower

LONDON (ShareCast) - TUI (LSE: TUI.L - news) topped the risers after the group's first half trading update had surpassed last year's trading figures. The group's full year guidance of underlying operating profit growth of 10% to 15% was reiterated, based on the strength of current trading, as online bookings for hotel resorts and cruises showed particularly impressive growth. Shell (LSE: RDSB.L - news) was trading higher as it completed the sale of more of its upstream Nigerian assets for $1.7bn, following another disposal in the country last week. The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria, a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell (Xetra: R6C1.DE - news) , sold its remaining interest in oil mining lease 29 and the Nembe Creek trunk pipeline and related facilities in the Eastern Niger Delta to local operator Aiteo Eastern E&P.

HSBC continued higher on Tuesday's news it would set up its new ring-fenced section in Birmingham. The banking giant is in advanced talks to secure a lease on a new 210,000 sq ft office to be built in the city's Arena Central enterprise zone.

Barclays (LSE: BARC.L - news) shares dropped after analyst at Investec Securities downgraded their rating on the bank to 'hold'.

Supermarkets Tesco and Sainsbury were both trading lower after Tuesday's inflation report revealed that food and alcohol showed the highest level of annual inflation, up 0.3%. Tesco (Xetra: 852647 - news) was further damaged by yesterday's news that it will definitely be facing multiple lawsuits for accounting anomalies.
