Yahoo Finance Fundraising For Super-Cheap 3D Printer Hits $2m
A Kickstarter campaign to create an ultra-cheap consumer 3D printer has raised $2m (£1.2m) in just three days.
Early backers will get the machine for just $199 (£118), and the device will hit the market costing $299 (£178) from August.
Kickstarter is a crowd-funding website where anyone can pitch ideas and ask for financial backing.
Makers M3D, which is based in Bethesda, Maryland, posted the printer idea on Monday, hoping to raise $50,000 (£29,000) in total.
But the target was smashed within minutes, and the current fundraising tally hit $2m at 11.20am on Thursday.
In its pitch on the site, M3D said the device is "the most affordable 3D printer that can be used right out of the box".
The printer is 18.5cm square and weighs 1kg. It can be used with Windows, Mac or Linux.
Software (Xetra: 330400 - news) that comes with the device will allow users to search, drag and drop objects to print.
M3D calls it "the first truly consumer 3D printer".
People who fund the project will be rewarded in different ways depending on how much they contribute.
The first 250 backers to offer $199 are set to receive one of the printers.
Backers who pledge $10,000 (£6,000) or more will get a laser-signed printer, a tour of the manufacturing centre, and dinner at the team’s favourite restaurant in Bethesda, northwest of Washington DC.
