Game of Thrones actor Indira Varma is to board the upcoming Star Wars spin-off series Obi-Wan Kenobi for Disney+.

The British actor is best known for her role as the fearsome and vengeful Ellaria Sand, where she starred opposite another Star Wars spin-off alum – The Mandalorian's Pedro Pascal.

As yet, there's no word on who she is playing, but she will be joining Ewan McGregor as he reprises his role as Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi.

McGregor played the role in George Lucas's prequel movies, The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.

The Obi-Wan series will take place following Kenobi's exile, between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, the first Star Wars movie, in which his character takes a young Luke Skywalker under his wing.

Hayden Christensen will also be returning to the franchise to play Anakin Skywalker, who later becomes Darth Vader, leader of the Empire.

The new series is the first in a number of new spin-offs in the Star Wars universe, which for now is focussing significantly on the small screen.

The Mandalorian will have its own spin-off, based on Rosario Dawson's character Ahoska Tano, who emerged as a fan favourite in the show's second season.

Temuera Morrison will also lead a spin-off about bounty hunter Boba Fett, while a Lando Calrissian prequel series is also in the planning stages.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi series doesn't have a firm release date yet, but is expected in early 2022.
