Gas prices: Quebec drivers hit with biggest hikes, Hurricane Beryl threatens U.S. refineries

Gas prices climbed nearly four cents per litre of regular fuel across Canada over the past week. Analysts say rising oil prices and an active hurricane season on the U.S. Gulf Coast threaten to raise fuel costs as the summer continues.

The average cost per litre of regular fuel in cities nationwide gained 3.9 cents between June 27 and July 4, according to data from Kalibrate. The biggest gains were in Sherbrooke, Que. and Quebec City. Drivers in North Bay, Ont. and Sudbury, Ont. caught the largest price breaks.

En-Pro chief petroleum analyst Roger McKnight warns that prices will be tough to predict this summer, as storm season kicks off in a key U.S. refining hub.

"Since about 50 per cent of U.S. refining capacity is located along the Texas/Louisiana coast, any actual or guesstimates of where Hurricane Beryl’s ferocious path will hit along the Gulf of Mexico can move gasoline pump prices in the wrong direction overnight," he wrote in a blog post on Thursday.

“The weather agencies are suggesting that this is going to be a very active hurricane season," TD Cowen managing director Jason Gabelman told Yahoo Finance earlier this week.

Meanwhile, crude prices are rising on concerns over a broader cross-border conflict in the Middle East, which could eventually see the direct participation of oil producer Iran. U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate (CL=F) is trading at its highest level since April.
