The Christmas food adverts on TV have gone, replaced by images of sun-kissed beaches and deep swimming pools.

Next week will see millions of people return to work after the festive break, making the long commute into the office, battling driving rain or freezing cold.

And, for many of us, thoughts will inevitably turn to making plans for a sunshine holiday.

While the amount of annual leave does vary, most who work five days a week are entitled to 28 days’ paid time away.

And here’s a terrific life hack to make the most out of that precious time: you can get 28 days straight away from work using just 14 days of annual leave.

Here’s how it works:

The first thing is to get hold of the staff holiday rota and check the coast is clear between May 7 and May 28.

You’ll need to book Tuesday, May 8 to Friday, May 25 off – and thanks to bank holidays, you will be able to get a super-long break without eating up too much of your allocated annual leave.

Your last day in the office will be Friday, May 4 – but the following Monday is a bank holiday, so that won’t count as one of your annual leave days.

Your last official day of annual leave will be May 25, the Friday before another bank holiday on Monday, May 28 – so you won’t actually have to go back to work until the Tuesday.

That’s 24 days out of the office – including weekends – for the price of 14!

Now all you have to do is make sure you get your boss on a good day to agree to getting the time off – and hope that no one else has beaten you to it…
