Warren Buffett’s Gift-Giving Tradition

Despite being known for his frugal nature, Warren Buffett reportedly used to give family members $10,000 in cash during the holidays. One Christmas he apparently opted to change his giving style by offering $10,000 in shares in a company he had just invested in. The recipients could choose between cashing in the shares or keeping them.

Aside from stocks and cash, Buffett is also known for another Christmas-giving tradition. In the 1960s, he started giving dresses to the women in his family by shopping at Topps in Omaha, Nebraska.

The gift-giving traditions don’t stop there. Buffett reportedly will also send boxes of candy from See’s Candies. These boxes come in a package with a playful annual Christmas card where Buffett places himself in silly situations.

Elon Musk’s Christmas Blunder

While Musk is sometimes known for his eccentric behavior, there’s a particular mishap worth sharing. One Christmas, Musk reportedly forgot to get his second wife, Talulah Riley, a gift. Riley shared that he disappeared for two hours to pick flowers out in the snow for her.

Musk has shared holiday spirit with customers as well. In 2021, his Tesla company gave away free supercharging during the holiday season to help reduce the stress of travel. Tesla users were given free access to superchargers on popular driving routes during the holiday weekend if they plugged in during off-peak hours.

Mark Zuckerberg’s Charity Donation

In 2012, Mark Zuckerberg made headlines for donating $500 million in company shares to charity to support education and health initiatives. While this donation wasn’t technically at Christmas, it was done during the holiday season. At the time, this donation to a Silicon Valley charity was his second-largest since he had pledged to give away most of his wealth to charitable causes.

Mark Cuban’s Cookies

Mark Cuban, the billionaire owner of the Dallas Mavericks and one of the investors on the “Shark Tank,” sends Alyssa’s healthy cookies to those on his holiday list. Cuban prefers to send these cookies because he feels people need something tasty that’s low in calories during the holidays. Cuban invested in the company when co-founder Doug Saraci sent him a box with a pitch attached.

In recent years, Cuban has donated to charities for friends and family during the holidays. Ray Dalio is also known for sending his friends and family blank checks during the holiday so they can write out the amount and charity they choose.

Other Notable Celebrity Christmas Gifts

We looked up other Christmas gifts from the wealthy to see what kind of ideas they had.

  • Kevin O’Leary gives out envelopes of cash. The “Shark Tank” star feels that everyone enjoys liquid cash. He even hands his wife cash for the holidays instead of opting for a more romantic gesture.

  • Jeff Bezos gifted Dolly Parton $100 million toward charities of her choosing. Parton is known for her giving and Christmas program specials, so she was naturally emotional when she found out she was being given this amount to distribute to charities.

  • Robert Herjavec, another shark from the “Tank,” sent out outrageous Christmas sweaters from Tipsy Elves one year to get everyone in the holiday mood.

  • Taylor Swift sent fans gift packages back in 2014 as a holiday surprise. The packages had a variety of items in them with handwritten notes attached. Every gift box was unique since Swift took the time to lurk through the person’s social media to figure out their interests. On a similar note, Swift even gave a private performance for a 96-year-old fan one year.

Those are just some of the notable Christmas gifts we uncovered from billionaires. As always, we will be watching on social media to see what kind of outrageous gifts are handed out during the upcoming holidays.
