US: Girl, 13, dies after 'being shot multiple times by boy'

A school principal has shared her devastation over the shooting death of eighth grade student Lucia Bremer.

Police announced a juvenile male has been charged with Lucia’s murder.

She was shot multiple times on Friday about 4:30pm (local time) while walking through the suburbs with a friend in Hernirco County, in the US state of Virginia, and taken to a hospital where she later died.

Lucia's Quioccasin Middle School Principal Melanie Phipps described the student as “exceptional; truly one-of-a-kind” in an emotional letter to her grieving family.

“Words can barely begin to describe the tragedy and loss for our community and beyond, but I will try,” Ms Phipps wrote.

“Lucia was funny. She loved to tell jokes and made people laugh. She was an amazing public speaker, and you would just listen in awe as she spoke.

“Lucia was wise beyond her years. Talking to her didn’t feel like talking to a middle schooler. Lucia was exceptional; truly one-of-a-kind.

“She was brave, hardworking, and kind to everyone. Her smile would light up the entire room.

“In fact, her mother told me that Lucia’s name means 'light', which is just the perfect way to describe her. She radiated happiness, and she loved our school”.

Devastated parents pay tribute 13-year-old

Lucia’s parents posted on their family farm’s Facebook page on Saturday morning confirming the death of their daughter.

"Liberty Tree Farm is saddened to report that our beloved daughter and joyful farmer, Lucia Whalen Bremer, was killed in a senseless act of gun violence on March 26," the post read.

"Thank you for keeping our family in your thoughts as we navigate the next few weeks."

Henrico County Police said in a media statement the identity of the suspect was being withheld because of his age.

He was taken into custody on Saturday afternoon and charged with second-degree murder and possession of a firearm.

“Our thoughts are with the family, HCPS student body, and faculty during this timely death,” Lieutenant Matt Pecka said.

Ms Phipps said the school was preparing to hold a vigil on Sunday. Attendees were urged to wear grey and white, which the principal said were two of Lucia's favourite colours.
