Gogglebox star Mary Killen claimed that her husband Giles Wood retired at the tender age of 21 during tonight's episode (May 15).

Giles has proved to be wonderfully entertaining alongside his wife ever since joining the show's cast of couched TV analysts, but this is news to even the most observant of fans.

Then again, the baffling mathematics of it all makes it sound like a joke – care to clarify this, Mary?

It all unfolded as the pair watched a harrowing coronavirus documentary, when Mary mentioned: "We'll just have to get herd immunity, it can't kill everyone..." before her husband sighed: "Just as I'm starting to enjoy my retirement."

"What retirement?" she hit back. "You haven't worked first. You retired at 21, so now you can start working – do it in reverse."

Although we don't know either of their ages, Giles and Mary reportedly met when they were both 21 and have been married for over 30 years.

Taking things to Twitter, Gogglebox viewers met Mary's claim with confusion (as did everyone, surely?).

"What the hell did Giles do to be able to retire at 21?" questioned one person, while someone else wrote: "How did Giles retire at 21?! I need tips pls lad x"

Still, her words did also raise a few laughs throughout the night.

Gogglebox airs Friday nights on Channel 4.
